Is Success After Weight Loss Surgery All About What You See on The Scale?

By: Dr. Kristin Allison

First and foremost, weight loss surgery success has to do with the amount of weight lost. At Tri-State Bariatrics, we consider patients to be successful if they lose more than 50% of their excess weight.  If you have not reached a certain weight and feel frustrated, make sure you talk to the treatment team to make sure your goal weight is realistic.

But, even if you are working toward further weight loss, don’t become overly preoccupied with a number on the scale.  Success after weight loss surgery can be measured in many areas as you progress on your health journey.  It is more than your weight.

Consider the following “non-scale” goals as your body changes:

  • Improvement in medical problems and less medication.

Weight loss can lead to better control of blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. With the help of your doctor, you may be able to reduce or eliminate certain medications.  You may no longer need CPAP for sleep apnea.

  • Less physical pain and more mobility.

Removing excess pressure on your knees, low back, and other joints may improve pain.  You may be able to tie your shoes, stand longer, or get up from the floor with more ease.  Travel may be less difficult, and events such as amusement park rides become options again.

  • More energy and physical activity.

You may find yourself returning to sports, recreational, or outdoor activities that you previously enjoyed.  Exercise becomes easier as your stamina increases, and you feel less short of breath.

  • More confidence, and community involvement.

For some, it may be easier to socialize, form new relationships, try new activities, or even assert oneself at work.  Your friends may notice and compliment you on your progress.

  • Ease of buying clothes.

Clothes are easier to find, less expensive, and shopping can be a fun experience.  Taking measurements of your body may show that you are losing inches instead of pounds as you lose body fat and build lean muscle.

Make sure you keep track of all your personal achievements instead of just recording your actual weight. This will keep your momentum going even when the number on the scale won’t budge.  Celebrate all the ways you feel better and more comfortable in your new body.  You may be amazed how your quality of life has improved since surgery!
