Types of Bariatrics Surgeries

Bariatric surgery has been successfully used for 25 years in the United States, and it is proven to be a highly successful treatment option for chronic obesity.

Today’s weight loss surgery options include procedures designed to restrict the amount of food that you can eat, promote changes within your gut hormones that assist with weight loss, and help you achieve and maintain healthy body weight.

Here at Tri-State Bariatrics, we perform three types of weight loss surgery — the sleeve gastrectomyRoux-en-Y gastric bypass, and the Lap-Band. All of our bariatric surgery options are performed laparoscopically by our team of licensed bariatric surgeons in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.

What Is Laparoscopic Weight Loss Surgery?

Also known as minimally-invasive, laparoscopic surgery is a precise, specialized surgical technique performed by highly skilled surgeons.

Traditional, “open” surgery that requires the creation of large incisions to access the surgical site, resulting in large scars, a long recovery time, and a high risk of post-surgical infections. By comparison, laparoscopic surgery is performed by making several tiny incisions called “ports”. The patient is placed under general anesthesia throughout the procedure.

The surgeon inserts a specialized camera and the required instruments through these ports and performs the operation while viewing the images on a high-resolution monitor. With bariatric surgery, the stomach is temporarily inflated with carbon dioxide gas to make room for the surgical instruments; this gas is released before the ports are stitched closed.

What Is A Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most popular permanent weight loss surgery options in the United States. It is a restrictive bariatric procedure that involves the removal of approximately 2/3 of your current stomach to limit the amount of food you can eat and help you feel full faster.

During sleeve gastrectomy surgery your surgeon will resect (cut out) a large section of your stomach and use surgical staples to create a long, banana-shaped stomach tube that can hold about 2 or 3 ounces of food at once. Learn more.

What Is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?

Also known simply as gastric bypass, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that diverts food away from a large portion of your stomach to both restrict the amount of food you can eat and limit nutrient absorption. This leads to a reduction in both your caloric intake and absorption, of sugars and fats, which can promote significant weight loss during the 12 to 18 months following the surgery. Learn more.

What Is A Lap-Band?

A Lap-Band is a surgically-implanted, FDA-approved device that is placed around the upper portion of your stomach to divide the stomach into two sections — a small, upper section and a larger lower section to help you feel full faster. Your bariatric surgeon controls the tightness of the Lap-Band by injecting saline into a small access port that is placed just below your skin.

The Lap-Band procedure is also known as gastric banding. Unlike other weight loss surgery options, gastric banding does not involve any surgical modifications to your stomach, and the procedure is non-permanent and reversible. Learn more.
