Successful Recovery After Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Pt.2

Successful Recovery After Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Pt.2

When someone decides to undergo bariatric weight loss surgery, they will undoubtedly have many questions. Some of those questions will concern the recovery time after surgery. As with any procedure, your body will need time to heal, but there are some steps you can take to help the healing process along.

In the first part of this series, we covered what you can expect directly after surgery and how your surgery staff will aid your recovery. In part two, we’d like to discuss steps you can take to aid your recovery at home.

How to Aid Your Recovery

You might think it’s a good idea to get as much rest as possible after your surgery. Actually, it’s best to ease yourself into movement and exercise as soon as you feel able. Activities like walking and moving around stimulate your blood flow, which aids in the healing process and helps you get back on your feet faster.

Directly after your surgery, your doctor and support staff will help you develop an exercise plan that you can begin at home. Your living environment might pose difficulties at first, such as climbing stairs or showering, try to keep your daily routine in mind before your surgery and set adaptations in place before you come home.

There are a few activities you should work into your routine as soon as you come home, such as:

  • Stay hydrated: if you feel nauseated, take small sips at a time. aim for 1.5 to 2 liters of water every day
  • Stay close to home: try to limit your travel to short distances
  • Wound care: keep your incision and the surrounding area are clean and dry. Your doctor will provide you with care tips

Finally, follow-up appointments are very important to your recovery. The Tri State Bariatrics team will be in touch with you throughout your weight loss journey. Once the time comes to schedule your bariatric surgery, we don’t want anything to cause you delay. Our staff works diligently to get you back on your feet and on the road to a healthier lifestyle.
