A Calorie-Conscious Valentine’s Day

There are some surprising facts about the number of calories in your favorite Valentine’s Day treats. SparkPeople blogger, Melinda Hershey, compared the calorie, fat, and sugar content in the most popular Valentine’s Day goodies. She concluded that, “keeping these numbers in mind can help you make smarter choices when it comes to choosing the right treats for you and the special people in your life.”

She found that eating five Hershey’s Kisses (112 calories, 6.7g of fat, and 12.9g of sugar) is a slimmer choice than three Godiva chocolates (220 calories, 13g of fat, and 19g of sugar). Here are more of the numbers she’s put together regarding the amount of fat, sugar, and calories in your favorite Valentine’s Day treats. The treats are ordered from highest to lowest calorie count per serving.

There are also plenty of calorie-free gifts you can give to your loved ones or treat yourself to. Some suggestions are:

  • Scented candles
  • Lip balms
  • Gym membership
  • Romantic movies
  • Gift card for a manicure or pedicure
  • Books
  • Jewelry
  • Skin lotions or moisturizers
  • The gift of your time (ex: a walk or a hike on your favorite trail together)
  • Flowers
  • CD or iTunes gift card
  • Couples massage
  • Balloons
  • Cards or love notes
  • Bubble baths
  • Box of flavored teas
  • Fitness tracker or pedometer
  • Gift card to his/her favorite clothing store
  • Perfume or cologne
