Finding the Right Protein Drink for You

Shopping for a protein drink can sometimes be a stressful experience. Navigating the various stores and internet can take a great deal of time and energy, putting a toll not only on your sanity, but also your wallet. Additionally, finding a drink that suits your taste buds can be a challenge. And don’t forget that often times your taste preferences change after bariatric surgery. But do not fret, we are here to help. By
following a few simple steps you will be able to find the right option for you.

First, talk to your dietitian or nutritionist. The nutrition staff at Tri-State Bariatrics is very well equipped in helping you find an option that works for you. We can give you suggestions based on your taste
preferences, budget and dietary needs. Samples of select products are also available in our offices and we are only a phone call away if you need some help while you are shopping.

Read nutrition facts labels. Reading a nutrition facts label can be confusing so be sure to focus in on what is most important, the protein and calorie contents per serving. Aim to find an option that is 110
calories or less and 15-25 grams per serving. There are exceptions to every rule so be sure to speak to your dietitian or nutritionist about other options that may be acceptable.

Don’t be afraid to request free samples from websites and health food stores. Sites such as www.unjury.com and www.bariatricchoice.com are happy to provide samples of their products for you to try. Plus, many stores
such as The Vitamin Shoppe and GNC offer generous return policies so that if you do not like a product you may return if for a refund. These stores also have staff that is equipped to help you find appropriate options. Be sure to bring your list of supplements when shopping.

Think outside the box. While EAS Carb Control AdvantEdge is the most popular option in our program, it is not for everyone. Many people do not like the milk-like consistency or want a wider variety of flavors. Think about trying protein soups, hot chocolates or fruit drinks, or even adding unflavored protein powder to your favorite flavored water. Unjury and Bariatric Choice (websites listed above) offers many alternative options,
as do most health food stores.

Always remember that the protein drinks are an important tool for your journey. They will provide you the much needed protein you need to promote a healthy weight loss and healing after surgery. That being said, don’t wait until after surgery to look for an option and don’t rely solely on one option. Try different brands and flavors so that you may have a wide variety of options available to you.

Happy shopping!
