Dr. Kwon did my surgery on Oct. 14, 2014. It was the best decision I ever made in my life.
Obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease run in my family. I lost my father in 2009 after watching him suffer terribly from complications with diabetes and heart disease. It was heartbreaking.
In 2014 after seeing my doctor and hearing that I’m borderline diabetic and have high blood pressure it scared me. I couldn’t go through what my dad went through, nor could I put my husband and kids through the heartbreak. It was at that minute I decided to call Tri-state.
My life has changed so much. I have lost around 90 pounds and feel amazing both physically and mentally. The best way I can describe the feeling to people that ask is that you don’t realize how crappy you’re feeling until you wake up feeling “normal”! No more aches and pains, no more heavy breathing from walking around. It’s a great feeling and I’m so thankful to all of you for giving me my life back!
First thing I will say is that Dr. Rivera along with my team of doctors from my Primary Physician to my Cardiologist saved my life ! When I stepped on the scale and saw that I had ballooned to 429 pounds I knew it was time for a life change and that I would need help. When one is that heavy the health risks are so high not to mention how hard my life had become. Simply bending over to tie my shoes was a daunting task never mind not being able to walk a city block without taking a break and I had developed countless health issues including severe Sleep Alpena. After many discussions with my Doctors and Family I made the decision to have Gastric Sleeve Surgery. I had already begun my life change 3 years earlier by quitting smoking for good, that was the first step. The change in my health from that alone was remarkable. Now came time to loose the weight for good and found my way to Dr. Ramone Rivera and TriState Bariactrics. After 6 months of support groups, nutrition classes and evaluations the day had finally come that would change my life forever. I had my surgery on May 4th 2015 and over the last 16 months I have lost 200 pounds, (THAT’S A WHOLE PERSON !!!) I have gone from a size 6XL shirt to a L/XL and a size 58 to a 38 waist and continue to loose weight today. My endurance level is thru the roof, my Sleep Alpena is gone and many of my medications have been cut dramatically and some completely eliminated. I now follow a regular exercise regimen that includes at least 10 miles of walking a day. And when I am not walking I get out and bike ride and swim regularly. This year I will also participate in the MS Bike Tour this year which is a 30 mile ride around Manhattan to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, something I never would have been able to do 2 years ago. My team at Tri State that includes Dr. Rivera, my Dietitian Vincenza Garcia and Nurse Practitioner Laura DeAndrade have truly help keep me focused and on track throughout my journey. And I cannot forget the front staff at the Suffern Office Audrey Cannizzaro and Leslie Rehyer who I adore and are so very encouraging and delightful !! If weight loss is something you need to consider to change your life, there is no better team that will help get you there than The team at TriState Bariactrics.

Nine years ago I was approved to have lap band surgery. I was successful in weight loss to the tune of almost 100 pounds. But during those nine years the weight began to creep back on. I didn’t use my tool correctly and I manipulated it, by eating the wrong things, and finding ways that would allow me to eat more. I gained about forty pounds back of the weight that I had lost, mortified doesn’t seem to begin to explain how I felt. I had given away all of my size 22-24 women’s clothes and I had purchased a new wardrobe of size 14 and I was terrified to think that I would have to shop again for larger clothes. One day after much contemplation I spoke with Dr. Rivera during a routine visit and asked him if I would be a candidate for the gastric sleeve. We spoke in depth about it and I decided that day that I needed to be determined and have a made up my mind to undergo weight loss surgery once more for the final time.
April 8th 2015 I was scheduled to have my lap band removed and to welcome my new gastric sleeve. My surgery was not easy as the band had made a home for itself in parts of my body that it shouldn’t have. Dr. Ramon Rivera saved my life; He removed the band and reconstructed my stomach to create my sleeve. After 3 hours of unexpected surgery I was a new woman.
The first few weeks were a struggle, your mind and your body goes through monumental changes. But once I was able to adjust it became easier to understand how to eat. For anyone that has or has had a lap band you understand that eating the proper foods can sometimes be difficult. With the sleeve you can eat healthy, you can be healthy. I have lost a total of 92 pounds, it has been one year. Has it been easy? Absolutely not, but it is worth it to be able to run up four flights of stairs, to walk on the beach without being tired , to have your blood pressure checked and see numbers you haven’t seen in years, yes it’s worth it. I have my life back again I am 52 years young and I hope to see 102 years young.
I made up my mind I wanted to live, live to see my grandchildren grow up; live to enjoy my family, live to enjoy life to the fullest. It’s not about looking great, that is a perk, and it’s about feeling great and living longer and being healthy. Dr. Ramon Rivera helped me to become healthy again, the least that I can do is take care of the tool he has given me to live longer. I am forever grateful to Tri state bariatric, they are the true meaning of professionalism, and they are kind, caring and compassionate .You become part of their family once you become their patient.
I have been struggling with my weight since I was 16 years old. I had tried every diet under the sun. Diet pills, any diet fad that came along, the grapefruit diet, the seven day diet, Weight Watchers, Nutri System. I would lose the weight maybe 20 lbs or so and then would gain it back.
In 1997 I had my first daughter and gained 60 lbs with that pregnancy, throughout the pregnancy I suffered from high blood pressure. I could not lose the weight from that. I had my second daughter in 2001, in the second trimester I found out I had gestational diabetes, I had to give myself insulin shots 5 time a day and test myself 7 times a day, I actually lost weight during that pregnancy, because I tried so hard to eat everything right, not wanting to hurt the baby in any way. After her birth I again gained the weight back. Trying everything to lose the weight, to no avail. I was miserable, for years, I was now suffering from high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, everything hurt my knees, my back. It affected every part of my life. I was depressed, I didn’t want to do anything because I was too tired, sick or hurting or just plain embarrassed. I felt like half of my children’s childhood was wasted with me not being able to do things with them. The last program I tried before deciding surgery, was Medifast, it worked I lost 55 lbs but again, short lived. My highest weight ended up being 263 lbs. That is when I finally decided to try surgery. In 2012, I started the process for the Lap Band surgery with Tristate Bariatrics, I went to the seminar and heard about each of the surgeries. I thought the Lap Band would be the best option, I was afraid of the permanency of the others. I went through the process, went to support group meetings, seen the dietician, the nurse practitioners, the therapist, with the help from them I was learning how to eat the right after the surgery. I had lost weight before the surgery, to start my journey off with all the knowledge that I needed. Surgery day came, July 1, 2012, it was easy, my recovery was easy, I started to see the weight fall off, I was so happy, off all my medications, feeling good, exercising, nothing hurt, just feeling awesome, again I had lost about 50 lbs. I started having personal family issues, my father was diagnosed with Cancer I became very stressed not doing what I should and unfortunately, I had slipped the band twice. The second time I slipped it I had the band removed. The weight came back on, I ended up back on all my medications, this time with the diabetes, instead of controlling it with eating right and pills, I was going to have to do insulin shots, again. I was miserable. I decided I could not do this anymore, I wanted to feel good once and for all and not have to keep fighting this. I wanted to be healthy and feel good again. So I made my appointment to start the process for the Gastric Sleeve. Again the staff at Tristate was awesome and helped me get ready for this big change in my life. July 1, 2014, I had the surgery. It has been the best decision I have ever made. I feel awesome, I lost just over 100 lbs. I love seeing myself again in mirrors, I kayak, hike, bicycle ride, dance and I shop, I love shopping now because I can fit in things right off the rack. My back does not hurt, my knees do not hurt and I do not take any medicine. I am now 2 yrs post-surgery and I just turn 46 years old, I have kept the weight off and still feeling great. I never want to go back to my old self. As you can see in my pictures before, I was smiling but miserable inside, now my smile is me inside and out.
Thank you for letting me share my story.
I retired from the NYPD 3/2006 @ 300lbs. I started the NYPD Police Academy at 184lbs in 01/1987. By the time 2015 came I was 354lbs. and I’m only 5’8″. I was on multiple medications all related to obesity such as Cholesterol, High Blood pressure etc. My doctor kept warning me that I was pre-diabetic. Finally the day came when I went to the doctor and crossed over to Diabetic and he sent me home with blood sugar machine and diabetes medicine. That was the last straw for me. I was only 50 years old walking around like an 80 year old man on all kinds of medication. So I started researching my options and decided to get Gastric Sleeve Surgery and chose to go with Tri State Baritrics. For the next month every Monday morning I would call Tri State for and appointment. As soon as they answer I would hang up. Finally after 3cweeks or so they answer and I asked for help. My first appointment was March 20, 2015. They were able to FastTrack me and I had my Gastric Sleeve done May 13, 2015 by Dr. Jamie Cepeda. I started this Journey at 354lbs. and now weigh 176lbs. 1 year and 3 months later. The staff at Tri State saved my life. I no longer take any medication except for vitamins and no longer have Diabetes. high blood pressure or high cholesterol. I feel as good now as I did when I was in my twenties and could not have done this without the support of my family.
Thank you Tri State.
Hi, my name is Erin D. and I had the gastric sleeve performed on December 29, 2015. I was 253 pounds at my heaviest and I am now 157! My goal is to get to 145! I was not always heavy but I always had to be active to stay thin. Well when I was 16 years old my whole life was turned upside down. I lost my father to stomach cancer and was in a terrible car accident where I was hit by a drunk driver and had to undergo 5 knee surgeries. Needless to say the weight piled on and did not want to stop. I tried every single diet imaginable to lose the weight as I was now well over a hundred pounds over weight. From jenny Craig to weight watchers to medi fast nothing worked. I would lose 20 pounds and gain 35 right back. Nothing worked and I was so depressed and felt so bad about myself. My wardrobe consisted of loose t-shorts and oversized sweatshirts. I hated getting dressed up and was more insecure than ever before. My now fiancé would tell me you look beautiful stop it, but when you don’t feel it there’s nothing anyone can say to make you see different in the mirror. Finally, after speaking to a friend who had the surgery I knew it was time to make a drastic life changing decision and that was to get gastric sleeve surgery. Now after just 7 and a half months I am down almost 100 pounds! I feel not only amazing on the outside by amazing on the inside! I have more energy then ever before and I am probably the most confident I have ever been in my entire life. This surgery saved my life and made me feel that I could accomplish anything. It was hard work and it is not a quick fix, I changed my whole way of life but it was the best thing I have ever done! Thank you so much tri-state for giving me my life back!
